Car Updates
I got a call from the dealership. My car apparently needs a new 3rd/4th shifter fork, new synchros for 4th, a new 4th gear, and a 3rd/4th housing. I'm not likely to have the car back before Wednesday. I'm pleased about the shifter fork replacement, as that fork was weaker on the earlier NCs than on the later ones, and some of the early 6MTs that were tracked have had issues with it. While I'm eager to have my car back, I'm pleased they're doing a thorough job, and I'm pleased they're not trying to fight me over warranty coverage.

Phew... If the shop had called and told ME that outcome, I'd probably be in a panic. If it's covered by warranty though, it's all good.

Yes. This is my first time sending a car to a dealership for a warranty repair, so I heard the list and had a moment of, "brace for the price..." And the price didn't come... "Oh, yeah, warranty, YAY!" :)

The race car needs a new 4th gear slider. :( Need to get off my ass and replace it at some point.

Bleh. :/ It took me just over a year to manage to get this done. Should have done it a lot sooner.

I wish I had time to replace it before heading down to VIR in April. I have to double clutch and then HOLD the shifter in place for a few seconds. *grumble*

I thought the problem was the shifter itself, but apparently not. The worst part is that I knew there was an issue when I put the engine and tranny back in. I just didn't think it was the tranny.

Hopefully 4th won't explode when I'm down at VIR. :)

Oh, sheesh that sounds like a PITA. Good luck with it. :/

Well, the good news is that replacement transmissions are cheap.

...the bad news is that I was talking with the guy who had an absolute lock on ITS around here (before he switched to SM and GAC), and he said that the transmission was the weakest part in his race car. (He ran an E36 that came with the same tranny.) There were times when he went through more than one in a weekend. :eeps:

See, this is why I'm scared of track days in my daily driver. I know I'm not good at holding back for the health of my car. I get caught up in the drive and try to squeeze everything out of both car and me that I can. And I can't afford to be risking these kinds of issues with my daily driver. The MX-5 cup racing is turning up a lot of info on the reliability of both the 6MT and 5MT in these cars (IIRC, MX-5 Cup started with the 6MT and switched to the 5MT after a large number of transmission failures).

Eh. At least in the 323, it was a combination of running an engine that was 100hp over what it was rated for for a time, as well as a much longer period of dipped clutch no-lift shifts. ;)

Haha, nice.

It sounds like there's risk of the weak 3/4 shifter fork going in this transmission even without that kind of treatment, but as mine's getting the stronger fork now, I'll be less concerned.

I didn't know if you ever saw this guy (http://www.mazdanews.com/node/view/1150) drive an MX5 in the MX5 Cup, but we used to date years ago. He races in a different series now (SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship), but that guy can drive the doors off of just about anything he sits in. He shamed me, badly, in my own car back in the days when he autocrossed an S. His roots are in the autocross world.

He lives in Ft Worth now, so I'm trying to convince him to come out for the Tour if he's around when it comes through Ft Worth. If he's allowed to, I'd love to see him hop into a Miata again and fly around a course!
