Cars and Computers (i.e. My Life) - Equiraptor's Journal
Cars and Computers (i.e. My Life)
The first two of these are car things and are for people in the Austin area. The second thing is also a beer thing. The last one is for geeks. If you are none of the above, this post isn't for you (but what are you doing reading my journal? I must bore you).

Thing one: There is a Spokes autocross Sunday, April 22nd at Burger Center. The last autocross at Burger was a blast (at least for me). I'd love to see all you area car people out there (Paradox? PARADOX! COME!)

Thing two: The Tejas Miata group (the central Texas Miata club) is organizing a run to Shiner to go to the brewery on May 5th. This is for Miatas by Miatas, but the organizer said "we can have some non-Miatas along" (though the cars should be able to keep up with Miatas on twisty roads). There is a risk of gravel roads, but if dings on your paint are a concern, we can bring painter's tape. There's also a $20 entry fee for the brewery. We'd meet at 9:30 at the HEB parking lot at I-35 and William Cannon. If you are interested in going please comment here, so I can tell the organizer how many are probably coming.

Thing three: I've been having some troubles with my Mac Pro. For a few months now, I've gotten what one person called "tearing" in the game. screenshot video A week or two (or three?) after the tearing started, I'd get some lockups. I could still ssh into the machine at that point, just the GUI wasn't working. So I'd ssh in and reboot. When we got back from NZ, it started hard locking. I had to power off the machine to get it back. This pissed me off. I called Apple and had a very bad experience with their support on Easter Sunday (as those of you on IRC probably heard about). Sunday evening I tried opening the Mac Pro's case and pointing a fan at the graphics card. This made the symptoms go away. I called back this evening with this additional information and had an entirely different experience. The call went well, and it sounds like they're planning to release a software/firmware fix through software update. The rep suggested I check software update "daily." When I asked about how long I should wait before I should call back if I don't see anything, he said he can't say any absolute timeframe but if I don't see anything in "about a week," to call back. So I'm thinking I shouldn't be waiting long for this to be fixed.

you might want to let your peeps know that the shiner bash, a bike ride that ends at the brewery, will be happening that day. it'll be probably the busiest day of the year in terms of # of visitors, amount of traffic, and orders of magnitude more bikers on the road--at least check the route the bikes are taking and drive a different way if you value your sanity =).. just fyi.

Eeep, yeah, that would probably be something good to know about. Thank you.
