It's here
The new Mac Pro has arrived. I'm using the Apple keyboard and the Mighty Mouse for now, but my nice, simple Logitech wheel mouse isn't far off. Unfortunately, my well loved keyboard that I've had forever (well, forever for me and computers) is PS/2 and therefore will not work with the new Mac. So, if I can't get used to the Apple keyboard, I'm stuck trying to find something else. We'll see.

So far? Vroom. It's like when I got the supercharger for my car, only with less G force and more pixels. I'm not impressed with the keyboard and mouse, and I keep forgetting all the one-time setup things that I had done on the iBook. nugget keeps remarking at how quiet it is, and I keep trying to find new things to mess with.

Civilization IV is installed and was very impressive for the 30 seconds or so I used it. I'm copying World of Warcraft from my iBook rather than installing it so it will already be patched. Unfortunately, even jut copying it over is proving to take a good deal of time. C'est la vie, it will be here when it's here.

Nugget has been taking pictures. I'll post them, eventually... I have other things to do for now. ;)

Edit: And here's the first screenshot.

I don't see how you can deal with all that gui-less stuff. I hated bitchx.

I don't know how people can stand to use a GUI IRC client. :-P

Yay Macs.

My machine is the loud one, now, though. This frustrates me. The room could be even quieter!

I have to say that the noise factor is one of the huge reasons I'm so excited about this new Mac Pro. So much power and so quiet - I'm such a nerd when it comes to fan noise - HATE IT.

The Mac Pro is ridiculously quiet. I used to think my PowerMac was quiet but I realize now how wrong I was. It's wonderful. Even when she fires up Civ4 or WoW, which I'd feared might kick off the graphics card fan, you have to put your ear right by the machine to hear anything.

They sell PS2->USB converters. :D

You're welcome to mine, if you'd like it.

nugget was telling me he thought that would probably need hardware support. I'm somewhat dubious... But...

I'm still at the "give the Apple stuff a chance" stage.

I've used them, and they "just work"... but generally, trying to use a PC keyboard on a Mac is generally irritating anyway.

That said, I usually use a Logitech G15 on a software-KVM with mine. The irritations are worth it for the extra goodness it provides for my gaming PC.

I see you're using an external display... SHINY. :)

Re: cinema bling

Uhhhhh.... How would I not use an external display? It's not like Mac Pros come with a screen attached.

Re: cinema bling

And you can't just put your hand on the top of it and SEE what it is doing? Pfft, loser.

I have such serious computer envy right now, I'm drooling. The drooling is probably unrelated, but still, worth mentioning.

Please keep posting updates over the next month as to how you like/hate it, since I'm doing everything I can to not buy one until the next versions come out with like 53 processors per chip. And a pony.

Re: cinema bling

oh.
that *would* explain the lack of 'Book' in the name of the system.
*ahem*
