World of Warcraft - My first mount
My first World of Warcraft character to hit level 40 did so today. This is a hugely important level, because it is when a character can first get a mount. For this character, a hunter, it is also when she can start wearing mail armor, which will give her better protection from attacks. As of yet, the character isn't wearing any mail. For me to switch, the armor will have to have better agility bonuses than my current leather armor (since the hunter herself is so rarely hit by mobs). I am, however, already saving plate for when the Paladin reaches level 40.

So, Equice got her level 40 mount today. It's a striped frostsaber, to go with her lightly colored everything theme (hence the "ice" in her name). Pictures can be found in the Equice portion of my Gallery. Special thanks to TheWeasel (daswiesel, Moldram in game) for loaning the majority of my mount money, and to Lefty (Teluun in game) for the remaining loan and purchasing the mount. Hooray for a 20% discount!

/cheer for level 40! I'm hoping to get the paladin (level 32) and the druid (level 34) there fairly quickly. Fortunately, the paladin gets her mount for free!

raging berserker helm from herod served me well. hell, it was a great helm for my warrior until maraudon/BRD.

... chains of scarlet crusade is a terrible set for hunters. I don't think any piece gives + agi. currently, hunters are terrible in melee. with the new patch, this may change. have you seen the new hunter talents? hunters are given a *huge* buff.

she leggings will be great armor for plate wearers for a long time (+20 or 30 to stats, I don't remember).

Beastial wrath is amazing. If a beast mastery hunter comes for you, all they have to do is send their pet in and just run away; the pet can probably take out most classes now (I play only PVP servers so that is where my thoughts dwell). Wyvern string (I personally think that should be in marksmanship) and surefooted are pretty incredible too.

I don't really see much that would make hunters better at melee but I have seen some funny videos of survival speced hunters destroying rogues that jumped them. :)

eh, stun-lock rogues should be able to destroy any class that can't get away or heal themselves.
paradox0220 From: paradox0220 Date: August 1st, 2005 06:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yes, stun lock rogues certain are problematic. My priest had a heck of a time with them. My mage did pretty well because I could blink out of the stun and had a lot of good crowd control techniques to keep them away. So now I'm playing on undead rogue (horde for the first time); if you can't beat em, join em I guess.

I will say however that an arcanite reaper-equiped warrior can put a hurting on a rogue. Warriors can live through the stun lock pretty easily it seems.

meh. no one wants a 2h warrior in instances. I play on a RP server (I don't RP - I was just dragged onto the server by my roommate). I hate tanking.

... I did find a destiny right before I ding'd 60, though.
paradox0220 From: paradox0220 Date: August 1st, 2005 06:37 pm (UTC) (Link)
I agree. On PVP servers it is difficult to make a talent spec that will be accepted in instances and yet have decent PVP skills. Priests are probably the worst. If you are shadow spec you can PVP pretty well but everyone wants a holy/discipline spec for instances or you can't get a group.

RP eh? Your the first person I "know" that plays one. I imagine it would be interesting to go to IF or OG to see what everyone does but "thee"s and "thou"s would wear thin on me quickly I'm sure. :)

few people RP. people who RP are fucking weird.

I have a 60 NE hunter and a 60 warrior
paradox0220 From: paradox0220 Date: August 1st, 2005 06:39 pm (UTC) (Link)
Stormreaver:
60 Gnome Mage
58 Night Elf Priest
[few mid 30 level characters]

And now I'm moving to the dark side.
28 Undead Rogue on the new Kalecgos server. Got a lot of my friends from AMD playing there to; so it is a lot of fun.

Well, I guess posting info about fantasy people living a fantasy life is better than nothing... ;P

Congrats! I had a blast jumping over newbie's heads when I got my mount. :)
Althought I was about 45 before I could afford it. I'm curious to see how you like some upper level instances that are coming up soon in your future.

Currently, I just want to get to level 43, so I can tame King B. He'll match my mount perfectly... *grin*
paradox0220 From: paradox0220 Date: August 1st, 2005 03:59 pm (UTC) (Link)
I was about to reply:

"Are you crazy? Hanging out in STV is a sure fire way to be chain-ganked."

... before I remembered the rules of a non-PVP server. :) So you aren't going with the Rake or that 1.0 attack speed cat (forget the name)?
xulong From: xulong Date: August 1st, 2005 04:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
it's such a pita to level up pets that are *so* far below your level. I tamed the cat by ratchet at 43 and gave up 20 minutes later when it kept on dying.
paradox0220 From: paradox0220 Date: August 1st, 2005 06:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yeah, you'd probably have to go to level 43 areas and fight mobs way below your level to get them moving along. Quite a pain I'm sure but hopefully mend pet helps some. If you don't plan ahead with your pets, you can really be in trouble. Personally, I like bears. They can take a lot of damage and give me a chance to attack with a bow. Cats just die too easily. :(
equiraptor From: equiraptor Date: August 1st, 2005 06:25 pm (UTC) (Link)
For the pet to get XP, the master has to. To the player has to solo, effectively sans-pet green mobs, to give the pet a tiny bit of experience, to level up. Either that, or find a group that will help him. :/
paradox0220 From: paradox0220 Date: August 1st, 2005 06:41 pm (UTC) (Link)
I gotta say, if Aimed Shot didn't have a 3 second delay, I would go night elf hunter all the way probably. Shadowmeld and then suddenly the horde finds a cat clawing their back and a few arrows in their rear to boot. :)
equiraptor From: equiraptor Date: September 7th, 2005 04:52 pm (UTC) (Link)
Wee, commenting on old posts. :)

With the stealth cats are getting, a Night Elf hunter is going to be that much better... Shadowmeld, and don't even have the pet sticking out to give you away... Then the pet gets an attack bonus on first hit... Sweeeeeet....
equiraptor From: equiraptor Date: August 1st, 2005 04:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
Not on this one. This will be my Marksman hunter (once the 1.7 patch is out). Attack speed isn't quite as important if you're not getting Spirit Bond. It can still make a difference, but I'll take a 1.4 attack speed for the white tiger look.

I suspect equiter (the dwarf) will go Beast Mastery. She currently has a 1.2 attack speed cat, and she *might* go after the 1.0 attack speed (though there are rumors that it will be nerfed when pet customization arrives). Equileaf will probably go Survival. She currently has a 1.3 attack speed black tiger, and will change to a 1.3 attack speed black panther... When I get to STV. It's so nice to be able to survive there. ;P

Wow, where are all of these hunter buffs listed? That is pretty incredible. Hopefully they give rogues some love soon. The last buff paladins got basically makes them do 350-450 a hit dmg to me (and this is sub level 40 guys) and all their healing is insane. A distance attack that stuns?! Give me a break.

From the rumors I head, mages and priests are next to get a buff (mages getting invis!).

See here, at least until the patch is released.

Text for Hunters:
Hunters

* Due to significant talent changes, Hunters will have all talent points refunded and can be respent. Training costs for all talent spell/ability replacements have been significantly reduced.
* Survival and Beast Master talent trees have undergone major revisions in an effort to give Hunters additional, viable choices when selecting talents.
* Deterrence - Will now increase parry chance when using Fist Weapons.
* Deflection - Will now increase parry chance when using Fist Weapons.
* Improved Concussive Shot - The stun effect can now be resisted.
* Trueshot Aura - Attack Power and Ranged Attack Power bonus increased, mana cost decreased, area of effect increased.
* Frost Trap - Updated tooltip to reflect duration of the Frost Trap Effect.
* Aimed Shot - Fixed tooltip to correctly display shot time.
* Auto Shot - Fixed a bug where switching targets would cancel Auto Shot. Switching targets should now continue firing on the newly acquired target.
* Scatter Shot - Should now cancel combat mode when used.
* Eyes of the Beast - Cast time reduced.
* Flare - Fixed the tooltip to accurately reflect the actual radius of the effect.
* Ranged Weapon Specialization - Now affects all ranged weapon attacks (e.g. Arcane Shot).
* Improved Concussive Shot - Will now have a chance to stun targets that are afflicted with other slowing effects (e.g. Wing Clip).
* Hawk Eye and Barrage have swapped locations, and we added 1 more rank to Barrage.
* Freezing Trap now shares the same duration in pvp as other long-duration forms of crowd control (ie: polymorph, fear, sap).
* The resist rate for hunter traps is now based on the hunter's skill rather than the level of the trap.
* Pet Abilities
o Hunters now have the first round of pet customization available. New passive abilities include increased armor, stamina, Fire resistance, Frost resistance, Nature resistance, Shadow resistance, and Arcane resistance.
o Hunter pets can now be untrained of all their skills from any beast trainer in the major cities. Similar to talents, untraining a specific pet scales up as you do it more times: 10 silver, 50 silver, 1 gold, 2 gold, 3 gold, etc., eventually stopping at 10 gold.
o Training point costs for all abilities have been rebalanced. You'll now be able to use all your pet's training points with meaningful choices. To help make "hunting" pets more viable in more situations, the Growl ability is now free to all pets.
o Bats, owls, and carrion birds can now learn the Screech ability, a fast single-target attack that also lowers the attack power of all enemies within melee range of the pet.
o Cats can now learn Stealth. In addition to being unseen, they receive a damage bonus for their first attack coming out of stealth.
o Scorpids can now learn Scorpid Poison. The poison deals Nature damage over time and stacks up to five times on a single enemy.
o Wolves can now learn Furious Howl. The howl adds a flat amount of damage to all nearby party member's next attack (within 15 yards).
* Hunter pets now gain experience based on the level difference between them and their target rather than the difference between the Hunters and their target. This will make it much easier to level up a low level pet. Keep in mind that the Hunter must still kill creatures from which he/she will gain experience.
* The tooltips for quick Hunter shots have been updated to show them as instant abilities.
* Feign death is no longer resisted by players.
* Hunters are now able to rename their pets while mounted.
* Hunter's pets will be smarter about when to use Dash/Dive.
* Fixed bug where Aimed Shot wouldn't cancel properly when the target moves out of range.
* Fixed a bug where lower level versions of Immolation Trap and Explosive Trap were being resisted more than they should be.
