That Samsung phone - Equiraptor's Journal
That Samsung phone
There's this Samsung cell phone with a variety of features that people seem to be angry about, currently. I know it's been posted about it at least three LJ communities, I'm sure many more. People say it promotes the wrong ideas about women and encourages eating disorders.

Huh? It helps someone keep track of calories burned, their BMI, and their menstrual cycle. All sound like fairly helpful things, to me. It's also being marketed specifically in Malaysia - see this post for a Malaysian's perspective. This phone seems to me to be more a marketing ploy than anything else. I don't see why one should throw such a fit about a phone. If you have problems with the apparent impressions this phone gives, work to correct society's impressions of these things, rather than banning the phone. Keeping track of calories burned and BMI can be extremely helpful for reaching and maintaining a healthy weight, and as a female who doesn't keep track of her cycle and wishes she did, trust me, that could be very helpful as well.

I just don't understand how this phone is so evil.

it's called cultural imperialism. I think I helped austincommunity have a healthy discussion about this last year when I was jobless and very very bored. I think it was about some woman who broke the law (adultery?) and was sentenced to death. I didn't hear anything that week three iranian children were executed for things like talking too much.

But how does this one device relate, when the many, many other devices that do the same things (just not all-in-one) are perfectly acceptable?

Someone decided to start to cry about it, and mentioned eating disorders, and people have jumped on the bandwagon without stopping to thing of the positive uses of such a device.

Seems like most people were just freaking out over their choice of words, i.e. the fatness calculator. I agree, that stuff would be helpful... well, not the BMI so much, it's not like that changes from day to day or anything, but the other features might be handy.

I agree with you completely (thought I haven't seen the uproar about the phone). If there is a demand for it, people will buy it. If people want to buy it, why should someone else tell them not to? If you are worried about eat disorders, go help educate people about the dangers... don't bash a little phone.
