A rant inspired this morning
I have a little tip for all of the males out there on that wonderful thing we call the Internet. Guess what? I'm female. Guess what? If my profile says, "Long Term Relationship," and doesn't hint that I'm looking for something "on the side," chances are I don't want to have sex with you (unless you're nugget). That fact that I am female does not give every guy on the Internet the right to IM me looking for action. A guy with the nick randraz2000 on yahoo messaged me today... This morning, during working hours (meaning if I used a "normal" IM client the message would have popped up on my screen):

hi there, listen if you need certain needs met, i'm your guy 36 married discreet looking for a needs partner.

How much of an asshole can you be? You're trying to cheat on your wife, or you're lying about trying to cheat on a wife, either way you're an ass. Plus you're IMing someone who's profile says she's in a long term relationship trying to get her to cheat, when her profile shows absolutely no interest in such activities. Guess what, dumass? If I were interested in that, I'd at least have enough sense to create a different yahoo profile for it. Males of the world: Please, don't pick random females and IM them looking for sex.

Edit April 4, 2005: Second message from him. I sent him, "You already sent me that. Please write down my nick somewhere and NEVER MESSAGE ME AGAIN. Thank you." Lets see if he can get it...

I also learned that bitlbee seems to be unable to properly block a user. Dangit.

maybe it was spam?

Nope, real person. Sent me a message back after I bitched at him.

If it makes you feel any better, I get lots of those too. I doubt the perverts even read the profiles.

I can, however, assure you that _I_ will not randomly proposition you for sex. :p

When I was starting to type this up, I was planning on putting something in it about, "The guys on my friends list probably don't need to be told any of this, anyway..." Then I got involved in the rant, and that thought went away.

hmm but he did know she was female though?

I get guys who try to make polite conversation, and then turn it to sex, guys who just go strait to begging for sex, guys who IM me because of the Linux and BSD mentioned in my profile, and then ask me where I live (in my profile) and how old I am (also in my profile). If you're a computer geek and you want to make small talk, ask me what programing languages I know, or something, not something that you've already read!

But, I guess asking these males to use their brains is a bit much.
nrubenstein From: nrubenstein Date: February 9th, 2005 08:06 am (UTC) (Link)
To be fair, many of those guys have probably never encountered a female with whom they can (or at least think they can) converse with.

But...

Ugh.

Gross and pathetic.

Weird. I haven't had that problem since I was a teenager - I almost never have anyone IM me I don't know.

Of course, it's probably because I don't have a profile set up these days.

Stupid boys.

sfw. I guess it's easier to cheat on your wife than to talk to her about it.

Ick, that's why I stopped using AIM. That was all I got, was horny male after horny male...they probably don't bother to read your info at all, or assume they will be the one to get you to cheat. The scary ones are the ones who get possessive and jealous two seconds into IM'ing you. Yeah, like I'd want to meet them in real life o.O

Is there an option in your IM client to not allow messages except by people that alredy exist on your list?

equiraptor From: equiraptor Date: February 9th, 2005 08:29 am (UTC) (Link)
I don't know. I don't want to do that, though. I don't mind people IMing me, I mind assholes looking for sex IMing me. Many people IM looking for help with their Linux installs, and if I have the time, I'm happy to help.

I just want people to not be assholes. Which is a bit much to ask in this world, I suspect.
cetan From: cetan Date: February 9th, 2005 08:54 am (UTC) (Link)
I suspect it is indeed too much to ask.

Do You

Really think boneheads will heed your sage advice? These nutjobs are desperate I suppose.
equiraptor From: equiraptor Date: February 9th, 2005 08:38 am (UTC) (Link)

Re: Do You

No. But I also don't expect any of the nutjobs who need that advice to read this post, so... *shrug*

My wife had this problem on LJ. She took that "LJ Match" quiz that made the rounds a year or so ago, and J Random Loser matched her 102%.

So he kept posting responses to her entries along the lines of "Hey, we're a 102% match!".

She responded by making the previous several months entries friends-only. But she forgot one 8-month-old entry.

Loser Boy followed up to the 8-month-old entry. "Hey, we're a 102% match!"

Some people just Don't Get It...

but yeah...that is a really dipshit thing to do...

Is there any way to trace that stuff back? It'd be interesting to send info to his wife. I'm sure she'd get a kick out of it.
equiraptor From: equiraptor Date: February 9th, 2005 04:53 pm (UTC) (Link)
I don't know of any way to trace it. Part of me is hoping (probably against all odds) that Google will index this, that she'll search for his username (out of suspicion or whatever) and will find it. I really doubt that would ever happen, but... *shrug*

But, who knows? He may not even have a wife. He could have been lying in the hopes of getting someone who liked that whole danger idea.
