MX-5 Ramblings
I want a new MX-5, before mine falls completely apart.

I'm learning why my dad doesn't maintain his old cars. It's a pain. My this needs attention, my that needs fixing, my the other is about to fail. Some of this is caused by the supercharger and related attachments, some of this is caused by my driving, but some of this is just flat out old age.

The new MX-5s are flat out better cars than my old NA, anyway. It's a bit more than 100 pounds fatter than mine (without retractable hardtop), but stiffer, and the weight is better balanced in the body. Both cars have a 50/50 weight distribution, but the weight is better placed in the NC than it was in the NA. The top on the NC works much better - it's a Z-fold, so it doesn't need the boot, and I can actually put it up and down from inside the car (barely), which I can't do with the NA top (yes, I'm a weakling). There are storage nooks and crannies all over the car, it has speed sensitive volume, etc. It's better from both a performance and comfort/usability standpoint. And the aftermarket performance parts in development for it are shaping up very, very nicely so far. Half the development team is a 5 minute drive from my workplace!

I want to build up a large down payment before I get one, though, and there's a lot of talking to do with the mechanics. So I don't really want to put too much into the current Miata if I'm going to end up getting rid of it... But there's so much more it could do. Still, it will never match what a new MX-5 could do with the same mods. I fell in love with that car when I drove it (just like I did with my '94).

My solution is to just replace everything.

...of course, I seem to have to do that with virtually new cars.

Some of the talking is, "Which set of shocks should I get, if you guys are going to be upgrading them immediately, anyway?"

I'm also seriously considering a NC hardtop, but when I graduate. fuck school loans - I need a new car.

I need new tires, new turn signal assembly, new caliper, blah blah blah. christ, what a headache.

I'm really impressed with that hardtop - Only 81 added pounds? Very, very impressive.

My transmission is my current big scary thing. I don't want to deal with that huge mess! I'm hoping I can nurse it until I can buy the new Miata, and then... figure out whatever I need to figure out.

oh yeah. my throwout bearing is making noise when I'm on an incline and starting, even though the clutch was replaced a year ago. and it's been making scaring sounds occasionally. I replaced the tranny oil and it still sometimes misses shifts to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

What's wrong besides the tranny?

And what's wrong with the tranny?

This post describes the tranny.

Other than that, there's:

The various twitchiness on startup thanks to the supercharger/ECU (due to mods)
The clutch that seems to be unwilling to sit quite right, but works well enough (due to mods? My driving?)
The (very slightly) leaky roof (due to age)
The radio cuts out occasionally (aftermarket radio, attachments probably aren't as consistent as they should be)
The antenna no longer goes down all the way (due to my driving)
The parking brake that stuck a few times (due to age)

err... I'll comment with more as I remember...

Hmmm. Yeah, sounds like "old car syndrome".

How much you want for the 1.8 + U3?

It'd go nicely in my '90 A package.

I wouldn't really care if it looked like a clown in a pirate hat. Actually, that would be pretty hilarious... Horrible, terrible, hideous looking car outrunning much nicer looking ones...

Enough of my "don't judge a book by its cover."

I figure I'll be driving it without forced induction for some time. Give the guys time to get the system stable, and give me time to have a car with a factory warranty! Wow, what a concept! ;) I will miss the acceleration of my current car horribly until the supercharger is ready for the NC, but I have learned patience.

What are you talking about dude. Altezza's are the ish. I like them on certain vehicles. On others it looks totally out of place. My car has silver lights, though I'm not quite sure they'd be considered Altezzas.

I know what you mean. I do not have time nor inclination to nurse a car along. The way I see it, you're going to be paying (and paying) for one reason or another - payments or repairs. I've leased my last two (unmodified) cars, and I don't see any reason to do otherwise ever again.
