Dr. Pepper Commercial
There's a Dr Pepper commercial that's been on for a bit... I don't really know how long. It has Leann Rhymes driving an Unkown Convertible, picking up Reba McEntire, singing, and drinking Dr Pepper. I've been wondering what vehicle it was - it wasn't easily recognizable. While watching the Simpsons today, I saw the commercial, and thanks to the Tivo, saw many angles of the car. nugget and I agreed the car looked very "Ford"ish, but it didn't have any Ford symbols. So, Nugget starts Google searches, while I turn to one of my new favorite car web pages - fast-autos.net. I look at all the likely sounding Fords, and find nothing similar. I know Shelby modifies many Fords, and there was the Shelby Cobra, so I head down to the "S" section. There, I find the 2000 Shelby Series 1. It has the side grills. It has the same front, with the same swooping headlights and the same front grill. It has the same back and the same rims. However, the one on fast-autos.net doesn't have the rollbar seen in the Dr. Pepper commercial. However, that's something that could be added. I think it's pretty safe to say Leann Rhymes was driving a Shelby Series 1.

Funny, that's the same way to make a small fortune skydiving...

Dr. pepper commercial

Are you sure it is not a viper?

If s/he wasn't, that car doesn't look like the Viper. To someone unfamiliar with two-seaters, it might, but to those who know the things, it's definitely not. The distinct markings on this car are the side grills and the nose - both the rounded scoop and the shape of the headlights. None of these are Viper characteristics, and they match the Shelby Series 1 perfectly.

Additionally, a friend sent an email to Dr. Pepper asking which car was in the commercial. The emailed response said the car was a Shelby, though it did not specify which model.

I know the commercial you are talking about. I thought it was a c5 corvette?

That's about as accurate as the Viper. If you look at those cars a lot, you'll start to see the differences. The front is a real giveaway with many cars. Here are a few examples:

Corvette:

Old Viper:

New Viper:

The Original Shelby Cobra:

The new Shelby Cobra:

Shelby Series 1:

You can see the difference in the front scoop, and how all the Shelbies have somewhat similar intakes, while the Vipers have that Dodge front end, and the Corvette is, well, a Corvette.

From these angles, the Corvette, the new Viper, and the Series 1 all have similar side grills (right behind the rear tire), but from a side view, the Series 1 has a distinct side.

These are some of the ways to tell similar cars apart. And I watched much of the commercial frame-by-frame, so I had a very good picture of the car in my head.

hehe.. I didn't watch it that closely.. I just remember saying to myself, "Are they driving a c5?"

I read the replies under this entry after I commented..

Has any of this made you want to drink Dr. Pepper anymore?

I'm a car geek - I said to myself, "Hrm, I wonder what they're driving.... Ooooooh, look at those sides! I don't know any car with sides like that!"

Has any of this made you want to drink Dr. Pepper anymore?
Could it? I live on Dr Pepper. I was raised on Dr Pepper. It is the one, true soda. But, it has made me want to see a real-life Shelby Series 1... :D

I think it is the Ford Shelby GR-1 concept vehicle, but its been awhile since I've seen the commercial

The GR-1 concept has the wrong side grills, and all the pictures I've seen show it as a coupe. The Series 1 matches every detail I've examined, from the drop top, to the front grill, to the very distinctive side grills.

Rimes/McEntire car

It is a Shelby 1, made by Carroll Shelby who designed the Shelby Mustang in the late 60's. He is doing this on his own now, not designing for Ford anymore.

the ad

Me and my friend had a long discusstion about what car it was. I first said it was a type of shelby and he claimed it was a viper. Later on I found, like you did, that it looks like a series1. All I'm say is do you have pictures to compare the two?? So I could settle this.

Re: the ad

I don't have screenshots of the commercial. The site I linked has a few shots of the Series 1, and if you look at them closely and then watch the commercial again, you'll see those features I keep mentioning... The side grills, the intake, all of that. If you have the right players installed, this might help. I believe it's the commercial itself.
