I was nearly hit on my way to work today. I was on the 1st street… - Equiraptor's Journal

I was nearly hit on my way to work today. I was on the 1st street exit ramp off southbound Mopac. The northbound exit joins the southbound ramp, but the northbound side has a yield sign (I think it's the northbound exit ramp... I'm not real sure, but that's what I'm calling it). I'm coming down the road, and I see a pretty recent volvo wagon on the northbound ramp. It looks like we'll hit the merge point at exactly the same time, but she has a yield sign, so I just keep going. It turns out, she didn't bother to look for traffic and nearly hit me. We were literally right next to each other where her lane joined mine... right by her yield sign. I laid on my horn, she noticed me, and slammed on her brakes. She then made some rather irritated hand motions at me. Right. You have a yield sign. You don't bother looking for oncoming traffic. Then, when you get honked at, you get angry. And she wasn't even on a cell phone.

Edit: I left off the best part.... I couldn't hear my horn over my radio. My horn is tooo quiet. :)

you should go to san antonio. you're supposed to stop completely at yield signs. a few people do, most don't.

Mew? A yield sign is a yield sign so people don't have to stop. I just wish she would have opened her eyes and seen my car. p.s. My headlights were on, even though it was a bright sunny day, so there's no way she can claim she didn't see me.

in san antonio it's a law to stop at stop signs.

I think it's a law to stop at stop signs just about everywhere. ;)

really? my driver's ed teacher just said "slow down and yield."

equiraptor eyes xulong...

A driver must come to a complete stop at a stop sign. They may merely slow down and look for other traffic at a yield sign (and yield right of way if there is other traffic).

sorry about the dyslexia. I wasn't paying attention when I said "in san antonio it's a law to stop at stop signs." I meant yield signs.

Hehe. It's quite alright. I was having fun watching the conversation. :)
And if that really is a law in San Antonio... well, ick. :(

Damn, until you said it was a woman, I though I was going to have to apologize. :)

WHAT?!?! Have you been trying to hit me? Well... I wouldn't mind if your insurance would pay for a new car... but... ;)

Oh, it's not just you. Sometimes in traffic I want to just start running everybody over. So if you see some asshole in a big green SUV (with ugly yellow Nebraska plates) driving offensively, please don't take it personally! :)

you know that, had you gotten into an accident, you could have been ticketed too. regardless of a yeild sign, the right of way has to be given, not taken. ahh, one of the many tidbits i know from way too many defensive driving classes.

Well, I suspect I would have done everything I could to argue that I did not deserve the ticket (in court, not to the police officer). The thing is, I had the right of way, by being on the main road and not having a yield sign. She was trying to take it. Our tires were next to each other. Had it been a merge with out a yield sign, fault would have been completely unclear, but because she had a yield, the accident would have been her fault. I have no doubt that I would have been ticketed at the scene of the accident, though. :)

noone pays any attention to yield signs in austin, on 35th street exit off of slopac thats dangerous, noone yields there either, i think austin is full of mindless yuppies who should have there oversized minivans and SUV's taken away and replace with go karts so the smarter more knowledgeable drivers can not worry about any damage to there cars or risking life or limb, it will be the idiots in the golf carts
