Horses...
I have a very vivid memory from when I was little - probably around second grade. I remember sitting at the head of the dining room table and drawing the most incredible horse head you have ever seen. It looked alive. It was pencil on paper, but it was wonderful. The horse's mane was blowing in the breeze. Her (I think it was a mare) eyes were alive. Her nostrils were flared just slightly to bring in the smell of the fresh breeze. I was so proud of it. I loved that drawing.

I think it was a dream.

I was sitting an the dining room table. I never drew there. I was also drawing in nice, bright light. Our dining room is dim. Had I actually drawn such an image, my mother would have stored it somewhere safe. She cannot draw - she claims she cannot draw a stick figure - so she would have been unbelievably proud.

Ever since, I have been trying to draw a horse head like that. I have literally spent years of my life trying. I would trace horses I saw in books. I would imitate photos. Try and try as I might, I have never come close to that drawing. Every single horse I draw is pathetic and ugly in comparison. I have spent two-thirds of my life trying to do this, and I always fail. *sigh*

Current Mood: sad sad

They say that horses and hands are the two most difficult things to draw accurately.

Hell, if you can draw anything that comes anywhere close to looking like a horse you're well above 99% of the population. I understand the drive for excellence (I once lamented about my ability as a lighting designer when looking at a wonderful sunset and realizing I'd never be able to create anything close to that), but you should be happy for the talent that you do have.

Oh, and keep practicing. You never know when you'll make that purfect image. :)
